Basic Rider Course

New riders: The Basic Rider Course is made for you if want to learn the right to ride.  We use a time-proven building-block process that takes you from your current knowledge and skill level to a capable basic rider who understands the dangers of the road.

The program consists of 3 training periods.  We begin in the classroom on a Thursday evening. The learning is student and group-centered.  There are no secrets in this course -- your RiderCoaches like you informed and prepared to learn, and to prove it, we tell you what we’re going to discuss during our first class [see Preparing for first night of class, item 3, Motorcycle Controls and Basic Riding Techniques Study Guide].

We ride and have classroom activities on the weekend.  All the riding is done on a closed training range where you get to practice and learn to ride without fighting traffic.  We ride on both Saturday and Sunday following your first evening class (rain or shine, hot or cold).

On the range you'll develop basic motorcycling skills. Specific exercises take you from learning how to properly mount a motorcycle, to starting it, to riding it.  At first we do primarily straight line riding, then we teach you how to turn on curves, to shift, and to properly brake. This is a very structured step-by-step program that develops riding skills in small incremental steps... each exercise building upon the previous exercise and constantly reinforcing learned skills.

In the classroom you’ll learn survival techniques. Motorcycling’s accident rates are so high because too many riders think they only need good riding skills to survive -- THEY ARE WRONG -- TOO MANY ARE DEAD WRONG!  Good riding is mostly a mental, not a physical act, and you’ll learn to appreciate that in the classroom. You’ll leave this course with BOTH the physical and mental skills necessary to ride a motorcycle.

Seasoned riders: Experienced rides who take this Basic Rider Course praise it -- learning things they hadn't heard before; riding better than they rode before.  Experienced riders also contribute to the course by assisting their group and sharing war-stories with the new riders.

Anyone thinking of taking the course: There is something in this course for every rider, no matter the riding level or experience. Check out the comments on the Feedback page and see what your fellow riders thought of the training.

This is a fully credited MSF course with a MSF Completion Card awarded to successful graduates.

Prerequisite: You must be able to ride and balance a bicycle to attend this course.
